Social Structure:
In Ancient Sumer, the social structure was very important. There were three different classes; the upper class, the common class, and the bottom. In the upper class, there were the priests, landowners, and government officials. They lived in the middle, or center of the city. Also, they lived in the most luxurious house that were two stories high, and had whitewashed mud walls. In the common class, there were merchants, craftsmen, farmers, and fishermen. The craftspeople were highly skilled metal workers. They worked with metals like gold, silver, tin, lead, copper, and bronze. They helped make swords, and arrowheads for the army. They made tools like plows and hoes for the farmers, and magnificence items such as mirrors and jewelry for the upper class. The farmers worked in fields, and built or repaired the irrigation system. But, in the times of wars, they were forced to serve. All of the common class lived in small, mud houses at the edge of the city. Finally, there were the bottom class. The bottom class was all of the slaves. They lived in their owners homes, and had no property of their own.
