Stable Food Supply:
Sumerians had two major ways of creating a stable food supply. The first was all of their complex irrigation systems. They built networks of canals, dams, and reservoirs to provide their crops with a regular supply of water. The second invention was the plow. The plow was used for tilling, another word for turning, the soil. They did this to prepare for planting new crops. Before the plow, farmers had to use animal horns, and pointed sticks to poke holes in the soil for seeds. This slowed down the process of having a consistent farm. They needed a way to speed up the process, so that the food supply was always stable. The Sumerians built the first plow out of wood, and one end was bent for cutting the ground to turn the soil. Either farmers pulled the plows, or oxen did. So, it is very important to have a stable food supply.
